The Background of Lewis and Clark and Their Journey Through the West
Lewis and Clark were commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to go explore everything west of St. Louis with goals to map out the newly acquired territory through the Louisiana purchase, also to study the geography, plant life, and establish trade with the natives. Lewis and Clark were also supposed to gain a presence in the territory before any other nation could come and claim that area. America want to control all of the land of the west.
Lewis and Clark made detailed maps and journals from the journey to come back and show Jefferson their journey. While going through the area Lewis and Clark had to create a trade market with the natives and establish a relationship with the natives. With this new found relationship with the natives the group of 33 people documented the living areas, culture, family life, and activities of the Native American tribes. Going through the long journey the group gained vast amount of knowledge from and about the natives.
The overall goal was achieved by Lewis and Clark's journey. They got information about the Native Americans, they established dominance in the territories, and they mapped out a great amount of area. After coming back from the journey the explosion of interest in the discoveries lead to a vast hunt for knowledge about the journey.
